Victory with the last throw!

For the first time in four years, in fact since we lost the track, the BRAT senior track & field team have won a league meeting.

The victory on Sunday 4th June couldn't have been closer – just nine points separating us from Abingdon.

Going into the final event, the men's discus, we trailed Abingdon by one point (355 v 356) but thanks to Jonny Briggs winning the A competition and Mark Lawrence (on his debut for the club) taking the B competition with a dramatic last throw of the day we managed to snatch victory !

The discus wasn't the only success for our male throwers; Jonny also won the hammer A, with Jack Vickery (also on debut) winning the B hammer. Alex Clegg took the javelin A and Igor Huszak (yet another athlete on debut) took the B javelin.

In total, out of a possible 64 points the men's throwers scored 58, their nearest rivals were Telford on 41.

Other winners on the day were Simon Lanckham who got a double in the steeplechase A and the 400 hurdles B races. Martin Matthews won the 3000m B race, Eloise Lee won the 1500A, Katrina Walker the A pole vault and the women's relay team grabbed a dramatic photo-finish win in the 4 x 100.

Also making their debuts and scoring what turned out to be invaluable points for the team were Ashley Fawke, Hannah Ludford and Naomi Johnson.

Thanks to everyone who turned out on the day and here's to the next one at Abingdon on Sunday 16th July – please make yourselves available as we are now joint top of the league with two matches to go.
