An unfortunate crop of injuries meant we were without several regulars for the final race at Wolverhampton, so we completed the league season but not exactly with a bang. Thankfully the guys who did make it to that start line gave it their all and ensured we completed 2 teams on the day. Several new boys along with some old campaigners decided to make a name for themselves and delivered really good performances, which is encouraging for the future.

The A team scorers were; Ed Banks 28, Jon Undy 95, Kelton Aldridge 96, Rene Vergo 102, Huw Jones 122, Mark Liptrot 134. A Team total 577

Although the A team finished a disappointing 14th on the day and we dropped from 7th to 9th place in the final league standings, the result kept us well clear of the relegation places (despite Athletics Weekly reporting otherwise). The B team came home in 7th place on the day and held on to 4th place overall, a very creditable result for the season.

The B team scorers were; Ben Beaumont 140, Toby Close 147, Andy Robbins 152, Nick Forrest 158, Adam Western 165, Martin Cleaver 177. B Team total 939

Martin Ludford 199, Owen Doherty 205, Richard Carney 229, David Sansom 233 were the other finishers.

Well done to all those who did turn out to represent the Club, and a big thank you to Jort, Rob and Raggy for supporting and looking after the discs at the finish. Good to see people getting involved.

Congratulations also to the BRAT women’s team who had a memorable day as you have no doubt heard, finishing 3rd in the Midland Women’s League and picking up Bronze medals. A massive achievement, which will really help to put the Club on the map; well done Geoff and the girls!

The final league race took place at Aldersley Stadium, Wolverhampton last weekend. BRAT ladies went into this race needing to defend 3rd place which they did magnificently to finish in our highest position ever. The team finished only 11 points behind Birmingham University in 2nd place; the league was won by Loughborough University. Team scorers on this occasion were Molly, Jen D, Helena and Becky H.

Excellent support was provided by Marie, Christine, Claire C, new girl Lisa, Cat, Sarah W, Rachel Y, Sarah B and Lizi.

This has been the best season ever with retention of Warwickshire trophy, 5 mile Midland Cross Country champions, 3rd in the Cross Country Relays plus individual honours in these races. Maybe we could be challenging the university teams next year; who knows? Final race is the Nationals at Donnington Park on the 27th February.

I would like to thank everyone who has run this year. Thanks all.

Men’s XC - Midland Championships – 30th Jan 2016

With Stafford Common flooded and unavailable, eight hardy BRATs travelled to the hastily rearranged location near Loughborough for the Midland Counties XC Championships which saw 350 of the region’s keenest XC runners race around the grounds of Prestwold Hall in Leicestershire, an interesting new venue for almost everyone I suspect.

Tim Carter had a great run to finish in 36th place, his best ever at this event, Mark Lawlor was very happy with his 83rd place, Huw Jones stormed round to finish 118th, an impressive result for an M50. Ben Beaumont 131st, Nick Forrest 153rd and Martin Cleaver 154th were battling hard all the way and were the other counters to bring the team home, with yours truly in 243rd place still trying to recapture race fitness. Bad luck for Tom Powell who had to pull out when his spikes disintegrated under him on the final lap when well placed for a top 50 finish.

This gave us 11th place out of 32 in the team competition, a good improvement on 15th place last year and 22nd place in 2014. Thanks and well done guys, definitely worth the trip!

After a last minute venue change BRAT ladies headed to Prestwold Hall in Loughborough for the Midland XC Championships. Greeted by a very muddy, hilly and exposed course the team were up against a challenging 8km race in tough conditions.

Despite a small team the BRAT ladies did themselves and the club proud coming in 9th place overall! Led home by Molly Browne with a 16th pace finish, Claire Capper had a brilliant run to finish 50th, Cat Bone with number in hand finished 91st, Sarah Wallis in 107th securing the team finish and Sarah Bakewell finishing strong in 132nd! With almost 200 runners in the field these were a fine set of results!

Next race is that all important Midland League finale in two weeks, where BRAT ladies will be fighting for that bronze medal, then it's onto the big one - Nationals at the end of Feb!

Men’s XC – Birmingham League Div 1 race 3, Coventry – 16th Jan 2016

Despite being several men down, the BRAT guys put in a real team effort at Coundon Park to finish 9th. We had 22 BRATs running plus Jort and Rob sorting out the discs at the finish, and great work around the course by Raggy on vocals !! Thanks for the help and support lads. Thanks also to Julia and Michael for the photo.

All our A team scorers were inside the top 100 which is always a good sign, and this resulted in a solid score of 444 points, to give us 9th place on the day which has kept us in 7th place overall with one race to go. The six scorers were Ed Banks 32nd Tim Carter 72nd, Chris Ashford 74th, Martin Matthews 77th, Kelton Aldridge 93rd, and Karl Welborn 96th. It was really good to see a nice mix of established runners and new faces fighting their way into the scoring six. Well done all on these performances.

The B team places were grabbed by Rene Vergo 117, Huw Jones 128, Thanos Tsolakis 130, Ciaran Connor 134, Chris Grimley 146 and Toby Close 156 to give a team score of 811, and 5th place on the day. We slip one place in the table but still lie in a healthy 5th position overall. Good work guys, keep it up.

Andy Robbins 168, Ben Beaumont 175, John Ridgway 181, Adam Western 189, Nick Forrest 196, Martin Ludford 216, Michael Gilbride 220, Rob Ryan 239, Richard Carney 241, and David Sansom 242 were the other BRAT finishers giving good depth to the squad.

The 3rd race in the Midland Ladies Cross Country League was held at a muddy if flat course at Crypt School, Gloucester. Ten BRAT ladies turned up to defend the 3rd place that we were in.

A season's best position again for Beccy (7th) and a best position so far for Molly (10th), a great run from Marie Ann (33rd), who had been ill and rallied to the cause on the day with another great run, and Becky Hair finishing in a brilliant 43rd were the team scorers.

This ensured we go into the final race at Wolverhampton still holding 3rd place. Great team performances on the day were given by Cat, Christine, Tabby, Rachel B, Sarah W and Sarah B. The final race is at Aldersley Stadium on the 13th February; hoping for a large contingent of BRATs in the final push to secure the 3rd place. See you on the 13th!

Last Saturday saw a large BRAT ladies contingent turn up to reclaim the Warwickshire County Championship at Warley Woods. At the final count BRAT ladies retained the trophy by a very narrow and nail biting 2 points! Beccy Tipping won the individual championship with a flawless run to continue her fine season. Jen Dale (6th) and Daisy Wilson (15th) made up the winning team.

Team support on the day was provided by Claire C, Sarah H, Rebecca D, Lauren T, Marie Ann, Cat B, Danni, Karen R, Rachel B, Sarah W, Carmen, Sarah B, Grace and Carol. Further Brat ladies success was provided by Annie Kenchington, who is now the Warwickshire under 20 race champion and Molly Browne who finished 2nd in the Worcestershire senior ladies race. Great performance by you both!

Thanks to all who ran and also congratulations to senior men winner Jack Gray. Future races are 2 league races where we hope to continue our team success so far this year and the midlands and nationals. See you soon.

Men’s Cross Country - County Championships - Warley Woods - 9th Jan 2016

Another successful day’s racing for the men at the combined Warwickshire and Worcestershire event saw a hatful of medals won by BRATs. Jack Gray won the Senior Men’s race outright by 15 seconds and was crowned Warwickshire Champion for the 3rd year in a row. Well done Jack, brilliant run. The senior men’s team unfortunately were not quite able to defend the Warwickshire team title they have won for the last two years but Jack, Ed Banks 7th, Chris Ashford 20th and Mark Ince 24th came home with team silver medals to add to their collection. Well done lads. Coventry Godiva won the team trophy.

A special mention to Martin Matthews in 26th place, who although a Master had agreed to be entered as a Senior along with Chris and Mark to bolster the Senior team. Sadly Martin was not one of the 4 medalists mentioned above and also missed out on the medal he would surely have won in the Masters team, but he played an important role in adding strength in depth. The other senior finishers were Tom Powell 16th though a non-scorer in this race until his transfer is confirmed, and Chris Grimley 53rd. Well done guys.

The Masters team themselves, Thanos Tsolakis 39th, Rene Vergo 41st, Huw Jones 45th and Toby Close 65th forced themselves into the bronze medal places in the Masters race. Well done to you guys, great work. Good support also from Nick Forrest 82, James Connolly 98, Nathan Smith 114, Michael Gilbride 121, Martin Ludford 125, Rob Ryan 165, and Ed Hartley 177.

Kelton Aldridge aged 17 running in the U20 men’s race, had a great run to finish in 4th place, unfortunately just outside the medals, but showing what talent he has. Well done Kelton, with two more years in this age group your prospects look good.

Tim Carter was running in the Worcestershire event and had a storming race to finish 5th despite falling mid race. Well done Tim, guaranteed selection for the County team for the Inter Counties Championships in March is well deserved.

Thanks for all the support from everyone round the course, and thanks to Richard Carney who was officiating at the funnel.
