BRAT Junior Athletics – End of Season

BRAT Junior Athletics – End of Season

U15 twins Lily and May Smith travelled to Stretford, Manchester on 26th September, with both doing the 100m and 200m and Lily also competing in the Long Jump. Lily was tantalisingly close to her PB in the long jump again with a jump of 4.80m and May beat her PB in the 200m by 0.13 seconds to run a time of 30.26.

U13 Alba Smith-Pena competed in the BCT Junior Aquathon on 26th September where she was just 10 seconds off of 3rd place. This is a fantastic achievement considering swimming has been off the agenda until recently so she has not been able to get any practice in.

The anticipated wet forecast did nothing to dampen the spirits of the 12 BRATS who travelled to Nuneaton on 4th October. It was U9 Erin and Josephine Colclough’s first outing – they obviously have their dad’s speedy legs as they finished 1st and 2nd respectively in the 75m with times of 12.97 and 13.66. U11 Erin McDaid was also in splendid form in the 75m finishing 1st with a time of 12.22.

The distance running proved popular with 5 BRATs taking part. It was U17 Oliver Brown’s first outing this season where he achieved a PB in the 1500m with a time of 5.00.55, knocking 13 seconds off of his 2019 time. U13 Niklas Van Mourik was also in action in the 1500m improving on his PB from September by 5 seconds to run a time of 5.05.78. U15 Morgan Hill was the 3rd runner in the 1500m where he secured a SB of 4.51.44. U13 Samuel Vaughan improved on his 800m time from September by 4 seconds to achieve a PB of 2.51.27. Another BRAT PB was for U11 Josh Taylor in the 600m where he was 3 seconds faster running it in 2.06.91.

Newcomer U17 Daniel Hindle ran a PB in the 200m with a time of 24.15 and Morgan Hill also achieved a PB at this distance with a time of 31.76. He last ran a 200m back in 2018 and had improved by 1.24 seconds. U15 Jamie Callaghan was in action in the discus again and also did a long jump for the first time in over a year where he improved on his PB by 63cm to jump 4.19m.

Sutton Coldfield on 17th was the last opportunity of the season to take part in an Open event; unfortunately due to self-isolation restrictions many youngsters were unable to attend. However, a number of BRATS were able to make it, with 5 of the U11’s taking part in the Quadrathon which consisted of a 75m, a 600m, a long jump and a howler throw. Erin McDaid finished an impressive 3rd in the girls group, just 24 points off of 1st place and also jumped a further 22cm to achieve a PB of 3.54m. Noor and Mustopha Bailey were also competing, with Noor improving on her previous Quad performances by 0.3 seconds in the 75m and 41cms in the long jump and Mustopha knocked 5 seconds off of his 600m time. Millie Gordon-Maclean and Joel Davies were representing BRAT for the first time, where they achieved times of 13.0 and 12.5 and jumps of 2.49 and 2.62 respectively.

Jamie Callaghan ran the 100m for the first time in 14 months and improved on his time by 0.66 seconds with a time of 14.2. He also threw the shot a further 44cm with a distance of 7.89m and the discus 25.84m which is just 19cm off of his PB.

Daniel Hindle was back in action, but this time in the 400m where he was 1st overall with a PB time of 53.3. U13 Evie Rendell ran the 800m for the first time in an impressive PB time of 2.42.7. Morgan Hill ran the 3000m where he secured a PB of 10.15 mins, which is a staggering 17 seconds faster than he ran just a month earlier.

Well done to all athletes, and hopefully next season will bring the opportunity for more to take part. Pictures as always are on the BRAT Flickr page – https://www.flickr.com/photos/birmingham_rowheath_ac/albums/with/72157712739307471
