Blue-Green Algae near Bittell Res at BGSC Southwtr 2/9/2010 12:58 A warning notice has been placed by British Waterways on Lower Bittell (i.e. the reservoir next to the one we swim in) where there is a surface mat of blue green algae. If the current weather continues, a similar blue-green algae mat at may form on Upper Bittell Reservoir near Barnt Green Sailing Club where we swim. The main health issues of swimming in blue-green algae are skin and eye irritation caused by contact with the mat and toxicity such as abdominal upset (e.g. nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea) if swallowed.
On Upper Bittell, the organisms are in relatively low amounts of blue-green algae at the moment and no mat is being formed. Obviously we can't control this, so a blue green mat may develop on the windward side of the reservoir or in other places especially at the margins of the water. The offending organism will almost certainly disappear later in the month (especially if there is restricted sunlight and falling temperatures and wind!).
It is a potential problem for swimmers so all need to decide whether or not to swim tonight. |
Re: Swimming in the North of the City Duncan 1/9/2010 14:07 BRAT Volunteers needed for 3 Spires Triathlon!
The BRAT Club and ChaseRace are joining forces to put the last triathlon of the 3 Spires series on. The event is on the 19th of September and we need marshals to make the event happen! The event is being held at the Friary Grange Leisure Centre in Lichfield, there is always a big BRAT turnout to this brilliant and friendly event!
In total the race needs 33 marshals, from lane counters to bike marshals to run marshals. This is a chance to put something back into the triathlon world by helping a local race organiser. If you want to race and marshal, that can be arranged, more details will follow for those of you that want to do both. There will be a social event in the Hedgehog pub after the event for the marshals (400m from the race venue).
This will be a great day out for all marshals, a chance to have a laugh watching other people suffer, a chance to learn a bit about how a race is put together and a chance to have a pint with fellow BRATs after a good day of cheering and shouting!
See the thread in the Your Races to register your name!

We need to book the course quickly so if you are interested can you please email me on duncan@kweenb.co.uk

helmets coxpc 28/8/2010 16:39 Hi everyone
International Stock - Silver Street, Kings Heath - has new cycling helmets much reduced. Don't know how good they are but someone might like to check them out? Also other bike bits and pieces.
They aren't open Bank Holiday Monday, though.

National Club Relays Duncan 27/8/2010 11:35 National Relay Championships at Nottingham.
A big thank you to all those who either took part or supported at the National Relays last weekend. Despite the weather the BRAT support was second to none so a big thank you to all who were there. However some special mentions must go to the club captains Lindsay Smith and Jon Tune for sorting out the teams (and Lindsay for helping one of the teams out), The Southwoods, and Tunes for building the temporary BRAT central for the event, much appreciated in the drizzle, the masseurs Hannah and Helen who kept all moving, The Hirschys for hosting the post relay BBQ and Adrian Carter for getting there early to build some racking for all the bikes, despite not racing till the afternoon. So on behalf of the club a big thankyou.
We had 20 teams competing and had several podium placings as follows (this is the reason for the delay in posting as we had to await confirmation on some results)
Silver - Womans - Zammie Cotterill, Ell Tune, Corinne Clark and Victoria (Rusius)Dixon
Gold - Womans Super Vets (50+) - Debbie Southwood, Chris Hirsch, Anne Marie Bathmaker and Carole Smith
Gold - Mens Vets (40+) - Steve Cock, Duncan Hough, Nick Horton and Mark Hirsch
Gold - Mens Super Vets (50+) - Stuart Geggie, Nick Ballard, Paul Robertshaw and Preston Eckloff
Great to see Mr Robertshaw on the podium as he has done so much to ensure so many others have been there before, so a special well done Paul
Well done also to Sara Butler who won the British Paratriathlon Championships (Tri6)the following day. |
BRAT Success at National Championships mark hirsch 26/8/2010 21:56 National Relay Championships at Nottingham.
Last weekend the BRAT Club continued its’ success with 20 teams competing and despite the wet weather in the afternoon managed several podium performances.
In the morning our Women’s team finished in silver medal position and the SuperVet (50+)women won Gold. In the afternoon Mens Vets (40+) and Mens Supervets (50+) also won Gold.
Well done to all those who took part and everyone supporting who braved the early start and the rain.
Well done also to Sara Butler who won the British Paratriathlon Championships (Tri6). |
Re: volunteers for London 2012 coxpc 24/8/2010 16:32 You might have been away when I sent out this message originally but there is still time to sign up to support the triathlon events at London 2012!
You will need to be an experienced sports volunteer, with specific triathlon skills, must be a BRAT and a member of BTF. It would be excellent to have a good BRAT representation there, helping to run the events. Email me - at coxpc@blueyonder.co.uk - if you want to be involved and I'll send you the link to the website where you can sign up.
If you're not an experienced sports volunteer, you can still sign up to be a general volunteer - from 15 September onwards.
Please note - I shall be away 3-20 September, without internet access, so please don't email me during that time. Will deal with everything when I get back - probably quite slowly!
Cheers
